What are the four language skills in English?
Royal Academy offers a broad range of assessment and learning tools to help evaluate and build the English-language skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing) of students or individuals and prepare them for the real-life academic or business environments that await them.
Speaking and listening
Speaking and Listening are the two essential language skills. Without a speaker and a receiver, there can be no language at all. Speaking enables you to speak in English about a variety of general and academic topics. Listening enables you to understand conversations and talks in English.
reading and writing
Reading and Writing allow us to preserve and archive language. If you are able to speak and listen, you can communicate - but you have no way to preserve such communication.
Reading enables you to understand written English as it is presented in textbooks and other academic materials.
Writing enables you to write in English on a variety of general and academics topics.
Speaking and listening is how we understand each other. Reading and Writing is how we build on that understanding. So the four English language skills measure a general level of English-language proficiency.
